| YMCA kicks off campaign
The Heritage Group YMCA prides itself on never turning away anyone for inability to pay. That especially holds true for financially struggling families looking for affordable child care. To make sure all kids have a chance to participate in Y programs, the Heritage YMCA is holding its annual Strong Kids Campaign, which raises funds to help families in need pay program fees. .
Language subjects could be made compulsory in primary schools
However Lord Dearing, whose review was commissioned by Education Secretary Alan Johnson, wants the Government to go further and make languages a compulsory subject alongside others such as English and maths. He is also expected to warn too many primaries are currently only offering French and need to introduce a wider range of languages including Mandarin and Urdu. Ministers are expected to respond positively to his recommendations amid fears of a collapse in language learning. Mr Johnson is said to want to change Britain's reputation as a "one language culture" to prevent the country losing out in the global economy. He has also admitted grave concerns over a Government decision three years ago to axe compulsory foreign languages for 14-year-olds.
